Director of Oncology Services

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Improve Patient Outcomes and Document Results
    1. Leads collaborative work with the physician leadership, program managers, clinical staff, and the Department of Quality to demonstrate measurable improvement in clinical care outcomes utilizing available benchmarks.
    2. Collaborates with Department of Nursing and physicians to improve the patient experience.
    3. Utilizes dashboards to monitor key indicators regarding clinical effectiveness, clinical efficiency, patients’ perspective, and financial performance.
    4. Supports as needed Department of Quality in the development of reports to organizational committees.  Provides assistance in addressing incidents and root cause analysis.  Facilitates activities between Department of Quality and service line physicians.
    5. Leads efforts to maintain the certifications and accreditations.
    6. Leads/Collaborates with program Medical Directors to develop annual Medical Director Goals and integrates those goals into service line activities.
  1. Increase Revenues and Contribution Margin; Decrease Total Cost of Care
    1. Supports efforts around care, redesigns processes to decrease resource consumption and the total costs of care and increase the contribution margin.
    2. Facilitates collaborative work with physician leaders, program staff and hospital staff to standardize treatment protocols to achieve reduced lengths of stay and consistency in clinical care provided.
    3. Creates monitoring systems to measure volume, net revenues, and costs for the patient populations.
    4. Through program development, integration, and marketing, increases revenues as measured by annual net operating revenues for inpatient and outpatient services.
    5. Collaborates with Revenue Management and Health Plan Contracting Departments to identify and address opportunities to increase revenues and health plan reimbursements.
    6. Collaborates with the Case Management and Social Work Department to address barriers to discharge and facilitate discharge planning activities for the patient populations.
  1. Increase Market Penetration
    1. Leads strategic planning, business planning, and provider alignment for the assigned service line.
    2. Leads physicians, program managers, and key clinical staff to develop, achieve, and track goals, strategies, and tactics.
    3. Prepares a multi-year strategic plans, annual business plan addressing market, operational, and financial issues.  Participates in hospital planning activities so that the service lines’ business plan strategies are consistent with the organization’s mission, vision, values and goals. Leads, coordinates, and advances strategic and business plans through triad, direct reporting, and other reporting to executive leadership.
    4. Develops SWOT analysis of the service lines based upon external and internal data with strategic and business plans.
    5. Develops an annual marketing plan, in collaboration with the Marketing Department, to identify target audiences, and communication vehicles.
    6. Prepares topics for newsletters and other marketing communications.
    7. Leads the development of outreach strategies for each service groupings.
    8. Collaborates with Medical Network to align and optimize service line for the Health System and serves as the Health System subject matter expert for specific service line.
  1. Program Integration and Operations
    1. Oncology Service Line includes: Medical Oncology Clinics, Infusion Therapy, Radiation Therapy, and Surgical Cancer (I.E. hepatobiliary, breast, colorectal, lung, neuro, prostate cancers)
    2. Leads/Facilitates Committees and Specific Clinical Programs including agenda preparation.
    3. Leads integration activities; oversees the overall integration of the components of services.
    4. Leads and empowers staff to support the work of the service line.
    5. Leads efforts to achieve a common vision and culture amongst physician leaders and staff.
    6. Leads the Capital and Operating Budget process in collaboration with the physician leadership and operational managers to prepare capital budgets for existing and new services and programs.
    7. Develops internal and external relationships with physicians and managers to achieve program reputation and growth.
    8. Develops new processes to enable patients’ enhanced access to services in a timely manner.
    9. Works with facilities management to design and develop new facilities and services for the assigned patient population.
    10. Works with EHC leadership to develop Medical Director Agreements that align shared interests of the Medical Staff and the hospital.
    11. Leads efforts to extend the hospitals reach to the pre and post hospital outpatient setting to improve patient’s long-term outcomes, reduce readmissions and improve patient satisfaction.
  1. Educational Collaboration
    1. Develops, maintains and expands regional relationships with universities in order to provide training and research opportunities towards improving care services and reducing costs.
  1. Fund Development
    1. Collaborates with the Hospital Foundation to develop a fund development strategy that supports the activities including research and education.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Health Care or Business Administration.
  • Minimum five years senior healthcare management experience; with at least two years’ experience in the development and leadership of a major service line.
  • Previous management as head of assigned service line, preferred.  (I.e. Heart and Vascular, Cancer, Neurosciences, Orthopedic, Surgical, or Women’s Health services)
  • Proven facilitative leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills including physician relations
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Financial Acumen and skills to do extensive analytical analysis regarding cost reductions and revenue enhancements.
  • Proven analytic and strategic planning capabilities developing and facilitating service lines. Experience writing and implementing strategic, business, and performance improvement plans.
  • Proven skills in facilitating service lines. Extensive knowledge of healthcare trends.
  • Must be able to integrate market, competitor, operational and financial information to create SWOT analysis and formulate business strategies.
  • Successful program planning implementation, evaluation, budget preparation/ management, and physician relations experience
  • Strong market analysis skills including assessment of referral patterns, market share data analysis, and opportunity assessments.
  • Solid understanding of quality and efficiency metrics and indicators.
  • Demonstrated and verifiable experience in complex matrix management situations.
